At South Hylton Primary Academy, we are passionate about the power of play. As an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, we believe that high-quality play is essential for every child’s development, wellbeing, and happiness.
Through our commitment to the OPAL programme, we have transformed playtimes into rich, inclusive and imaginative experiences. Our outdoor spaces now offer a diverse range of activities, including quiet areas for reading and drawing, small world and role play zones, a mud kitchen, and a dedicated music area. Children also enjoy more active opportunities like den building, tyre play, and open-ended construction using crates and pipes.
Every child has had a voice in shaping our play environment and helped create our OPAL Play Charter, which you can view [below]. Regular assemblies help us celebrate successes and keep everyone informed about new developments.
We’re excited to continue developing our play offer and always welcome community support. If you have any unwanted items such as pots, pans, wooden or plastic utensils, tyres, crates, or pieces of pipe or guttering, we would love to give them a second life in our play areas.
